WELCOME TO BOWDEN AND SON LLC.
Two generations work this crew, father and son. We have been framing, tiling, and finishing homes since the 1990s, and we run our own schedules and write our own estimates. You get the same two of us from the first walkthrough to the last piece of trim, which is rare in this trade now.
We answer the phone, we show up the morning we said we would, and we do not leave a job half finished.
- Family-owned and operated by carpenters, not salespeople
- Licensed and insured in Massachusetts
- Free written quotes before any tool comes off the truck
- Military discounts on every service we offer
OLD HOUSES PUNISH SHORTCUTS.
Open a wall in a 1940s colonial off Route 197, and you rarely find what the plan assumed. Joists notched for a drain line. A bathroom subfloor soft under the toilet flange. Studs that are true 2x4s and refuse to line up with anything modern. Bowden and Son LLC’s price and schedule for that reality instead of pretending it away, so the discovery does not become a 3-week stall. Photographs of what we found, a straight explanation of what it costs to fix, and a decision you make with the information in front of you.
WE BUILD THE PART NOBODY WILL EVER SEE.
Waterproofing behind shower tile. Blocking where a grab bar will go in 15 years. Flashing above a ledger board. Compacted base under a paver joint. None of it shows up in a photograph, and all of it decides whether the finished surface is still tight in a decade. Our carpentry habits come from framing and remodeling, so the substrate gets the same attention as the tile that covers it.

WHAT DUDLEY HOMEOWNERS SAY
BOWDEN AND SON REVIEWS.
Kristina R. hired us for a back patio in pavers. We quoted it fast, came back to map the layout before construction, then removed the old pavement, dug out and compacted the area, laid crushed stone and pavers, and reseeded the yard we had to regrade. A day and a half, start to finish.
service areas
SERVING SOUTHERN WORCESTER COUNTY.
Dudley, MA is where we are based, and most of our work sits within a half hour of it. Webster, Oxford, Charlton, Southbridge, Sturbridge, Auburn, and Worcester see us regularly, and because we are licensed in both states we cross the line into Thompson and Woodstock, CT without a second thought.
Staying close is deliberate. A crew 20 minutes out can swing back for a punch list item the same week instead of the same season. It also means we know which building departments want what, and how long each one actually takes to issue a permit.

Common Questions
frequently asked
questions.
These are the questions homeowners ask before any of the specific trades come up. If yours is not here, send it through the contact page and we will answer it plainly.
Do I need a building permit to remodel a house in Massachusetts?
Structural work, new plumbing or electrical runs, window openings, decks, and additions all require permits. Cosmetic work such as painting, flooring over a sound subfloor, or swapping a fixture in place usually does not. Your building department makes the final call.
Who pulls the building permit, the homeowner or the contractor?
A registered contractor should pull it. When a homeowner pulls their own permit, they take on responsibility for the work and give up the protection of the state Guaranty Fund if something goes wrong later. That trade is rarely worth the small savings.
What is the difference between a renovation and a remodel?
A renovation restores or updates what already exists, such as new cabinet doors, fresh paint, and refinished floors. A remodel changes the structure or the function, moving walls, relocating plumbing, or converting a space into something it was never built to be.
Should I remodel one room at a time or all at once?
Doing connected spaces together usually costs less per square foot, because demolition, permits, and trades mobilize once instead of three times. Room by room makes sense when the budget is staged or you cannot give up a whole floor.
